Helping small restaurants in queens leverage TECH to compete IN A GROWING NEIGHBORHOOD

THE CHALLENGE

Change is hard, but choosing not to when necessary is choosing to fail. Large companies such as Starbucks, Chipotle, Panda Express, and 15 new hotels are opening up their businesses for the first time in Jamaica, Queens to take advantage of the growth happening in the neighborhood, while local mom and pop business that have given Jamaica, Queens culture and economic value for decades are left on their own to figure out how to position themselves to attract new customers and compete with large brands in the new Jamaica.


THE OPPORTUNITY

Progress Playbook teamed up with Greater Jamaica Development Corporation, Goldman Sachs, Con Edison and a host of technology companies to design RESTECH, a bootcamp that trains small restaurants on how to leverage technology to better compete and scale their businesses in a growing neighborhood. Restaurant owners selected into the program are paired up with a food photographer to take new product and store shots to rebrand their businesses and then attend a series of technology workshops and one-on-one sessions with experts to integrate new tech tools and strategies, such as point-of-sale (POS) systems, websites, delivery apps, recruiting platforms, social media, and internet marketing into their businesses.

THE PROGRESS

Participants received $2000 worth of services and products for absolutely free!

  • The participating restaurants formed a cohort and wish to connect online by creating a facebook group to further their support and resources with one another.

  • Four (4) new websites are a result of this program.

  • Eight (8) businesses are discoverable on Google and managed by restaurant operator as a result of this program.

  • All restaurants had their businesses “verified” with google through the google expedited verification process. They will have full control of their Google Search page in 5 business days instead of two-weeks.

  • Each business will be visited by Google 360 photographer Jim Ryan, for their 360° video capture

  • All vendors expressed that they would participate again, and found the program to be necessary and highly impactful.

  • With the opportunity to produce this platform again, we would stretch the time commitment over 6-8 weeks and meet for two (2) hours at a time.
