The Way Young People Think About Money Matters
How Progress for Good is helping young people build the mindset, skills, and confidence to become financially free adults
Money Beliefs Begin Early
Long before a young person receives a first paycheck, opens a bank account, or applies for credit, they are already developing beliefs about money. Those beliefs may come from watching family members stretch limited resources, hearing that wealth is only for certain people. These early messages matter. They can shape how young people earn, spend, save, invest, and imagine their future. Someone who believes money always disappears may struggle to plan ahead. Someone who sees wealth as out of reach may never explore saving, investing, entrepreneurship, or ownership.
Financial Freedom Starts With Confidence
Financial freedom is not only about earning a high salary. It begins with believing stability is possible, understanding how money works, and having the confidence to make informed decisions.Too often, financial education arrives after a crisis—when someone is already facing debt, damaged credit, or financial stress. Progress for Good works to reach young people earlier, before limiting beliefs become lifelong habits and costly mistakes become harder to correct.
A Practical Money Mindset Workshop
On June 20, 2026, Progress for Good participated in the Office of Neighborhood Safety Youth Leadership Council Youth Summit at Hunter College in New York City. As part of the Economic Stability track, Malik Garnett, Community & Partnership Engagement Manager, led Money Mindset: How to Think, Make, and Manage Money.
The workshop went beyond a traditional budgeting lesson. Participants discussed spending, saving, investing, entrepreneurship, multiple income streams, and goal setting. Most importantly, young people were encouraged to see themselves as capable decision-makers, planners and creators.
Combating Barriers to Financial Freedom
Progress for Good is addressing more than a gap in financial knowledge. The organization is helping young people challenge beliefs formed through scarcity, gain relevant financial education, build confidence with money, and discover pathways to entrepreneurship and wealth building.
Through workshops, partnerships, mentorship, and learning opportunities, Progress for Good creates safe spaces where young people can ask questions, practice decisions, and connect financial concepts to their lives. Economic stability also strengthens community safety. When young people have access to knowledge, opportunity, trusted support, and a believable path forward, they are better equipped to make choices that support their wellbeing, families, and communities.
Building the Next Generation
One workshop cannot erase structural inequality or create wealth overnight. Financial freedom develops through knowledge, habits, access, opportunity, and consistent support. Yet one conversation can challenge a harmful belief, one practical tool can change a decision, and one mentor can reveal a path that once felt invisible.
Progress for Good is helping young people develop the language to discuss money, the tools to make informed choices, and the confidence to believe economic mobility is within reach. This is how we build the next generation of financially free adults: start early, make financial education practical, and give young people consistent ongoing support to create stable, independent futures.
